Helping Pets with Loud Noises

We are coming up to that time of year where there are thunderstorms, fireworks, and lots of loud noises. For some of our fur babies this is a very stressful time.  The team at Coxwell is ready to help! We have a few tips to help your babies feel as comfortable as possible.

First, we realize that this is a stressful time for you also, you are worried about your little one but the best thing you can do is to stay calm and relaxed.

It is a good idea to prepare a comfortable place for your pet in the event of a thunderstorm or fireworks. Be sure to provide familiar toys and games to help distract them from what is going on outside.  If you have time, its good to have them all set up before the loud noises begin.

Close all windows and doors to try to drown out some of the noises.  You can also close all blinds to ensure they cannot see outside. Have your television or radio/music playing something upbeat and happy.

Your company will also help a lot! Cuddling or playing with your furbaby will help keep them distracted. Just remember to not intensely coddle them. In moments of anxiety pets may react in ways they don’t normally, this could include lashing out unintentionally. An owner would never want to be on the unfortunate end of this situation.

For some of our pets this is just not enough and they are still nervous. In this case it might be a good idea to meet with one of our doctors and discuss further options! Please let the team at Coxwell Animal Clinic in Toronto know if we can be of any further assistance to helping your pets deal with thunderstorms or loud noises.
